The Quality of Classy People

What defines class? Or what makes a person classy? Darshini and I were discussing this today on a walk.

Before I bring up some of the answers we found, I have to say I reserve the right to be politically incorrect and as biased as I want to be on my blog. We know that good taste shouldn't be defined by someone; people shouldn't be slotted into categories or classes, one person is not better than another because of his or her activities, that we shouldn't like a person more because he or she is physically attractive.
And yet we are incorrigible, aren't we when it comes to judging and classifying people?

To get back, after happily discussing a great many people we know, we thought that some things could define the few that we thought as people with class.

People who don't push and pull, who don't yell (mostly), who treat everyone the same, who don't look over your shoulder while talking to you; people who don't crib and complain a lot, people who are good humored mostly , are not afraid to spend money...

But overall its a feeling that they give out- they accept and know themselves and know where they are going. They neither puff themselves up nor demean themselves in any way. They have a nice feel about them.

Any other definitions?

Reading thro' the given definition, Mother Theresa springs to my enthused heart....

For the Unclassy, shift eyes 25 degrees to the right as you read this, to see his picture :-(

Hmm.. so many qualifications. I would add people who don't talk down to you and patronise you to that list.
Class is something that people have in them - I don't know if it can be cultivated.
A nice piece - makes you think...

Newton, I definitely agree with you. Its difficult to class someone with so much facial hair as classy.:-)

Raji, accept your modifications.
Yes, I dont know if its a quality that can be cultivated. Like charm maybe, you have to be born with it.

Eliza Doolittle...

Wasn't Eliza cultivated into a charming Duchess finally ?????

You must see the movie.

P.S. oh... that's Original Tolstoy's... borrowed to hide the Unclassy :-(

I might be wrong in thinking this way, but aren't all the qualities you mentioned indicative of a person being logical?

personally, to me being classy is being able to make logical decisions irrespective of our emotional state.

does that imply logic = class?

i'm confused.

Aalok, that's a new twist to the definition of being classy. But I don't know if logical goes with all the qualities I enumerated.
Maybe it just means people who are more intelligent? so logical goes with it very often.
But not always.
